Statistics
There are three perennial Rivers namely Ravi, Beas & Sutlej and one non-perennial river namely River Ghaggar in the State of Punjab. Besides these rivers several Choes, Nadies and Khads also traverse the State of Punjab and out falling into these Rivers. Mainly Sakki/ Kiran Nallah, Sakki Nallah Diversion, Patti Nallah, Kasur Nallah, Hudiara Nallah, Chand Bhan Drain, Budha Nallah, Chand Bhan Diversion Drain, Jhabowali Choe, Swan Nadi etc.
The drainage administration has created infrastructure of about 1800 Kms. long flood protection embankments, 3800 Nos. River Training Works and 7200 Km long drainage network for proper drainage of rain water to save the agriculture land from fury of floods and to check the water logging in the water logged areas. The length of various rivers Embankment thereof falling in Punjab State are as below:
- River Beas L = 256.43 Km, Embankment = 215.84 Km,
- River Sutlej L = 582.68 Km, Embankment = 484.12 Km,
- River Ravi L = 141.29 Km, Embankment = 245.28 Km
- River Ghaggar L = 165.00 Km, Embankment = 252.81 Km

Recently Completed Projects

- Laying pipe line 600mm dia RCC NP 2 (6300 Ft.) to drain out flood water from low-lying area of Village Bam (PIDB)

- Lift/Gravity flow pipeline (600mm) scheme RD 0-7200 to drain out flood water from field and abadi of village thandewala (District shri muktsar Sahib) outfalling into thandewala link drain. (PIDB)
- Strengthening and rising of Right bank From RD 12450 to 17100 of Sarawan Bodla Drain. Construction of Inlet structure on Fathepur Manianwala Field Drain. (PIDB)
- Project for flood protection work of Border out posts (BOP's) and Defence installation of Border Security Force
- Estimate for Channelization and Concrete Lining of Sirhind Choe from RD 518952 to 514900 (BML Syphon D/s to Ambeymajra) to Drain out the Rainy Water to the Adjoining area of Fatehgarh Sahib (Amount 4.27 Crore)

- Construction of bridges on river Ghaggar from villages for roads connecting villages Karail to Handa and Moonak to Tohana.
- Construction of Water Course X-ing At Rd 29684/29693 Of Aspal Drain
- Construction of V.R Bridge on River Sutlej Creek Connecting BOP Mauzam Forward to BOP (GG-III Teja Ruhela)
- Construction of steel foot bridge with 3m carriageway with overall length of 94m over river ghaggar RD 319500 in village sardulgarh, district mansa. (Amount Rs. 1.82 Cr)
- Rejuvenation of Badi & Chotti Nadi, Construction of STP's & ETP and Laying of sewerage Network, at Patiala on EPC basis including O&M for a period of 5 Year.(Amount Rs.78.35 Cr)
- Construction of 16 No. VR Bridges on Various Drains under Sangrur Drainage Division. ( Amount 16Cr.

Long Term
- Project proposal for channelization of Sakki Kiran Nallah from reducing distance 18000-510000 in Amritsar and Gurdaspur.
- Project Estimate for flood protection works along Indo-Pak border falls with River Ravi and River Sutlej to protect different BOPs, international boundary fencing and other defense installation on account of National security in the State of Punjab.(209.58 Cr. Approx)
- Project Scheme for re-alignment and channelization of N-Choe from RD 4943 to 8128 mtr fall in IT City (Sector-101 Alpha City) near Village Chao Majra, S.A.S Nagar.(Amount Rs.22.43 Cr)
- Swan river Flood Management Integrated Land Development Project starting form Punjab Boundary (D/s of Santokhgarh Bridge) to its confluence Point with River Sutlej at U/s Thana Bridge near Sri Anandpur Sahib including D/s Flood Protection Works in District Roop Nagar Punjab (50:50)..(Amount Rs.284.98 Cr)

Mines and Geology
Mineral Resources of the State
Punjab is blessed with three perennial rivers. These rivers contribute abundantly to the Minor Mineral in the State. Minor Mineral deposits sand and gravel are abundantly available to meet the requirements of the State besides contribution to the requirement of the adjoining States. These Minerals deposits get replenished each year due to continuous flow of water during flood season.
Department of Mines and Geology
Department of Mines and Geology, Punjab was formulated in year 2018 and thereafter vide order dated 29.07.2020 of the Government of Punjab, Mines and Geology Department has been merged with Water Resources Department Punjab. The main functions & activities of the department are survey and assessment of the mineral deposits of the State, their exploitation, administration of mines and mineral concession, checking illegal mining and enforcement of measure for curbing illegal mining and collection of mining revenue. Besides ensuring strict environmental measures are being adhered to.
