Punjab which is also known as the land of five rivers is derived from the Persian words, Punj (five) and ab (water) which was also in Indus basin till 1947. After the partition, Indus Water Treaty of 1960 assigned India the right to use only the three Eastern rivers (Sutlej, Ravi and Beas), the other three Western rivers were to be used exclusively for Pakistan (Indus, Chenab and Jhelum). Punjab also has a very developed aNd interlinked river and Channel system which is 14500 kms long.

  What we do:

  • Irrigation management: We run and maintain a wide network of canals and other irrigation systems to achieve safe and secure water transfer to agriculture.
  • Flood control and drainage: We maintain the flood plains and the drainage system to save the areas from the flood and water logging.
  • Groundwater management: Groundwater resources are monitored and managed to prevent over-exploitation and sustainability.
  • Water policy and planning: Our responsibilities include developing and implementing water policies and plans to handle water issues in the state.
